IRON STREET FAIR

December 9, 2010

Iron Street Fair, held during the late summer in a crevice of Detroit. It was one of the last fresh summer days of Detroit left. The sun was soothing, but as soon as shade or shadow hit, chills filled, though they seemed prepared with heating lamps set up in the center of the fair. Iron Street almost felt like a wide alley with doors that led to galleries & abandoned buildings. The lone street was filled with artwork, from corner to corner of one side of the block, along with tents & booths, as well as a sound system for live entertainment.

Captured here are snapshots of the art displayed & voted on for a small art competition. Some competitors included Detroit artists, Sintex, Iges, & Riku. There are also photos of one of Detroit’s darlings, Espy, fully taking advantage of the day on her bike, partaking on fair festivities like face painting & all that fun fair stuff. There was much to bask in at Iron Street Fair, from art inside, to art outside, to art to wear (clothing, purses, fragrances), to art to share (pieces for sale).

In his honor, here is a throwback aerosol painting of Mr. X by my man SinTex.. this portrait is posted in our living room, never forgetting. His teachings remains embedded in the best of us.. Rest in power.

“If we don’t stand for something, we may fall for anything.”

“Stumbling is not falling.”

“How can anyone be against love?”

“Respect me, or put me to death.”

MOTORCITY CRIBS FT. SINTEX

Motor City Cribs

SinTex’s crib, where he keeps the notebooks

By Doug Coombe — Even if you don’t know who the hell Detroit’s master graffiti artist SinTex is, you’ve seen his work. It’s all over Detroit, even gracing the Black History Mobile 101 Museum.

The 26-year-old SinTex (born Brian Glass) has been rocking the spray paint for more than 10 years. Dude studied commercial art at Detroit’s Crockett Technical High School (where he also captained the golf team!) and went on to study at Pratt and CCS. SinTex’s kinda like Glenn Barr’s long-lost brother, but one who grew up in Detroit listening to hip hop.

Besides illustration, animation and graffiti art, SinTex recently taught himself 3-D computer rendering and began making wildly imaginative action figures of Detroit hip-hop stars. He’s got one of Phat Kat completed, with action figures of Black Milk, Guilty Simpson and Danny Brown in the works.

His graffiti pieces are typically large, vividly colored and retina-saturating tributes to hip-hop and African American icons, B-boys and B-girls, and the occasional kung fu figure.

“To pull the details off with aerosol you have to work large,” SinTex says. Typically the guy can pull off a floor-to-ceiling piece in a few hours. SinTex pays the bills working (and frequently flying to Europe) for Plutonium G spray paints. His studio’s conveniently around the corner from his Madison Heights digs.

Stored beneath SinTex’s drafting table are more than 100 notebooks filled with years of character sketches. “One of my Crockett teachers told me never to throw out a notebook, because you don’t always appreciate when you have a good idea. Mr. Corbin, if you’re out there, I still got ‘em all.”

home sweet new temporary home

September 2, 2007

i’m moving into a new house for the rest of the year & it’s in my best interest to make it as cozy as possible.. i.e. lace the crib in proper steez. i have the perfect theme, best of both my worlds.. ethnic & street.. while configuring this thought, it pretty much came down to a fresh prince type feel.. i’m down with that.. bright ethnic patterns, keepn it street.. i want touches of gold & jewels, substance of the natural earth & hiphop bling.. ha.. i will keep a basic black base to tone down a lot of the flair that will be expected to fill the room.. accented in gold, keepin it live in color. i like that.

over the bed is a black sheer canopy, sexy huh?

the idea of magazine & newspaperstands indoors have been lingering for a while

of course, crates as shelves.. typical indoor street furniture, i know.

if it ain’t gold, it will be

i also expect good art on the walls

& you can’t forget

damn baby you smell like neosoul!

you get the drift!

beat street

August 10, 2007

this won’t make sense but, i’m watching FRIDAY & i wanted to share the whole movie on here.. well i can’t find it & i have a list of other things to show you like BEAT STREET. which has nothing to do with friday, but enjoy.. full-length arrrite!

oh but in discussion of friday (& i’m talking about the one with ice cube folks), you notice smokey is real shiesty with his shit? well if you’re from cali then you know that’s how they do it.. ha ha.. i noticed in the south & midwest they got a different kind of smoke etiquette, they’ll gladly smoke you out no question (usually). in cali, they will almost always ask you to throw in. at a party someone will roll a blunt & ask who’s gonna throw in. in the words of the luniz, i got five on it.
