For those who are familiar with tumblr, the term GPOY is a tag accompanied by a picture of oneself, or perhaps a photo that represents them or what they do. It can mean “Gratuitous picture of yourself” or “Good picture of yourself” or something like that. Well anyway, here’s a candid shot of myself during the Detroit Fashion Week closing night on Saturday September 24 at the Detroit main public library. Photo Credit: Jason Ramon

I was in the house to take runway photos for my fashion blog, Motown Couture, at the Real Detroit Weekly website. I am using my dinky Olympus E-420 – it’s considered a compact DLSR camera and it does me pretty good. It’s very lightweight and streamlined; the only trade-ins for its convenient size is that it doesn’t have image stabilizer nor video, but it’s all good, I get by. I don’t consider myself a photographer per se, I just take runway photos for my blog – plus, I might be one of the few people in the city that knows proper fashion show photo composition – not to say that I’m an expert or anything. We’ll save that discussion for another time.

I have to admit, I did have trouble with the runway set-up & lighting at the event. If you know me, then you know I despise using flash for the runway, however, I decided to use it after seeing the models blend in too much with the guests in the background, especially at the angle I was in. Since my external flash takes a few seconds to recharge after a shot, I was only able to take one frame of each look at a time, so it was literally a hit or miss. Enough of the boring stuff, be sure to check out the photos & event coverage at Motown Couture.

I am working on launching an online resale shop under the name, honeyBOOM, a retail line that focuses on vintage sportswear by the way of my own designs thrown in the mix. The vintage pieces I collect are old school bboy/bgirl inspired. I have lots of windbreakers, leotards, & track jackets, with a dose of Kangol hats & Cazal frames. I also include other unique, yet relatable, apparel like vintage rompers & crop tees. My own designs will come in a form of handmade accessories, t-shirts, & other goods & thangs.

I actually started this project under a different name, I was calling it “Gold Crate Club,” symbolic for digging & collecting classic pieces – just as how DJ’s would “dig in the crates” for special records. I decided on changing the name when I was thinking of new approaches for the project, basically to refresh everything. “Honey Boom” is a phrase that’s been familiar to me since adolescence. You may recognize it while you were jamming to RBL Posse’s “Don’t Give Me No Bammer Weed,” lol. Female rappers, Sugar ‘N’ Spice, also had a track called “Honey Boom.” I am born & raised in the San Francisco Bay Area where both RBL Posse & Sugar ‘N’ Spice hail, so songs like that stuck with me hard. “Honey Boom” could also be translated as an expression similar to: “Girl, please!” or “No she di’int!” or even giving a “BAM!” effect. It’s all in good fun.

I have several exciting things in store for honeyBOOM in the coming weeks! You can get a small preview at honeyboom.bigcartel.com. Official launch to follow soon!

CHANGE GON’ COME

PSA: The mission of this site will be heading into a new direction.

What was a blog on coverage, reviews, & event posts, will be turning into a website of my own ventures & projects – a portfolio. You could also expect some posts on jawns I find inspiring or exciting, I’m going more free form. So rock it steady as I post updates on freelance hustles, adventures, & loves.

I’m switching it up because I feel it’s time, as a creative person myself, to build on a platform that would help me record my own development as an artist. I really do enjoy sharing interesting arts & people & things, thus my focus as a blogger. I find a sort of serenity when I can bestow gems in not only the arts, but everyday life. Check it though: you could still follow my fashion blog, Motown Couture with Real Detroit Weekly! I appreciate the opportunity to blog with RDW, giving me an avenue to post about fashion lifestyle, which then allows me to turn RI$I$M into something more intimate.

Bare with me as this site transitions into my portfolio & personal blog. I’m still the same ol’ me & I will still share jewels galore. We’re golden.

Miss Gina T is the mastermind behind Identified: A Fashion Affair, a fashion networking event held in Detroit, MI at the Hotel St. Regis. RI$I$M was able to catch up with Gina T this past Sunday, August 1, 2010, as she expressed her thoughts on the Detroit fashion community as well as elaborating on her contributing fashion lines. SUMMER STORM

July 23, 2010

Summer StormFashion Trends & Styles - Polyvore

Summer Storm by RisMoney

My dad refers to the summer storm season as “June Gloom,” for obvious reasons like it would be June, & the sky would be gloomy.. Although, the storms have been prominent way past June this year, making it “Not Dry July” & possibly “Aqua August” [haha]. I’m not mad at it though; the 95% humidity, 80 degree nights, & overcast is straight tropical, even out here in the Midwest. Also, swimming in the hot rain has been one of my favorite pastimes this year. It seems the storms have been around just as much as the sun has, the only thing that makes it considerable summer weather is that it’s hot than a mug! How does one dress for such a bi-polar forecast? I suggest getting comfortable in your swim suit, throw some golaches in your beach bag, & wear acrylic jewelry.

STEELO: SWEATER PANTS

June 3, 2010

Sweater PantsFashion Trends & Styles - Polyvore

Sweater Pants by RisMoney featuring Matthew Williamson shoes

Second attempt at a style collage..
As a bgirl, I have always been an advocate for comfort; sweatpants are my best friend. I love the concept of “casual chic,” or better yet, “discreet chic.” My dear friend, Asia Willis of The NYLA Report had a post on her site about sweats & heels, & my immediate response was, “I am not mad at it.” If there’s anything I can wear for the rest of my life, it’s sweatpants.

Also, notice how I paired up socks with the heels.. Since my move to Michigan, I am fully aware of the frequent brisk forecast. I started to wear socks with my strapped heels & wedges in the fall, nylon socks or thick knits, no matter. I’ve grown fond of the additional accessorizing; rock it well, whether it be because of a past-due pedi or just for that extra, extra.

The scarf in the set was meant to wear as a head wrap, like flower child style.
