hi, do we remember jean grae? when i was listening to her she was on thirdearth, now she’s with talib kweli’s blacksmith records(warner bros.), reppin’ okayplayer.. when i was in TEC back in ’02/’03, ms. grae was one of my idols. yknow, fella femcee.. she’s got a creamy flava, her voice alto-esque & smooth.. think a light modern mc lyte. she’s no bullshit lyricist, & her beats are on point.. please aquaint yourself with this fly female emcee, or you need to recognize.
a brief biography about tsidi ibrahim aka jean grae: she was born in capetown, south africa from a family of musicians. studied vocal performance in the highschool of performing arts, then majored in music business at nyu.. joined natural resource in ’96.. after nat res dissolved in 98, she changed her name from ibrahim, to what?what?, to jean grae. in ’02, she released her first lp attack of the attacking things.. throughout her career she has also recorded tracks with numerous major hip hop artists, atmosphere, the roots, talib kweli, the herbaliser, da beatminerz, planet asia, dj jazzy jeff, phonte, mr. len, masta ace, vordul mega, c-rayz walz, and immortal technique among them.
i don’t know what made me think of her.. either way, appreciate.

i can recall some of my first days aknowledging music more.. i remember two artists that i was crazy about when i was a young ass girl, like 7 years old young.. michael jackson & TLC.. some ris-story, haha.. in honor of that, a TLC tribute.
tlc forreal influenced me for years.. from the way i dressed, to my favorite color, to what i wanted to do for the rest of my life.. (some of those things may have changed, btw.) i remember overalls, bright baggy clothes, big hats, & 50cent vendor accessories.. they’re the ones that started my pattern of dressing “daring.” man if you only knew what i would wear.. i was down for cuttin up my clothes, shiny pants, big plastic neck pendants, looney toon tshirts.. sometimes it wouldnt even make sense, but i got it from them..
tlc had these skits i’d always see on mtv.. seems impossible to find anything on it right now, but if you remember you know wassup.. there, i learned purple was chili’s favorite color, & to this day, it’s still mine.. i used to say chili was my favorite, but mostly cuz she had long hair like me at the time & whatever headwear she put on, i did too.. i really did favor them all for different reasons; t-boz the leader, left-eye the freshest. they were really comical girls, & totally positive about everything.. always trying to send out some message but being cute about it.. for instance, they were always wearing neon condoms & bandaids on themselves saying be safe & take care of yourself.
when crazy, sexy, cool came out.. their style was def more r&b girl group-like.. yknow matching outfits done in different cuts & awkward straps everywhere.. id sit down & try to make some outfits up for them.. i would send it to thier fan-club hoping they’d use it.. ha..
ooohhh on the tlc tip was the first record i ever had to myself, my very first album.. here’s to personal history & long-time influences..
